{"id":10587,"date":"2025-06-05T08:58:02","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T08:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firearmman.com\/?p=10587"},"modified":"2025-06-05T08:58:04","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T08:58:04","slug":"army-leaders-defend-parade-and-border-spending-as-congress-presses-for-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firearmman.com\/?p=10587","title":{"rendered":"Army leaders defend parade and border spending as Congress presses for answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-testid=\"prism-article-body\">\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \"><span class=\"oyrPY qlwaB AGxeB  \">WASHINGTON &#8212; <\/span>Army leaders on Wednesday defended spending as much as $45 million to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-military-parade-army-tanks-cost-584f60f4efc341bce44a2d01c3f5c58c\">add a parade<\/a> to the service&#8217;s 250th birthday celebration on June 14 in Washington, saying it will help boost recruitment, as Congress members argued that the money could be better spent on troops&#8217; barracks or other priorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Members of the House Armed Services Committee also said they are concerned that the Defense Department is shifting about $1 billion from a variety of accounts \u2014 including base housing \u2014 to cover the costs of shoring up the defense of the southern border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Spending for the parade has become a flashpoint since it comes at a time when the Trump administration is slashing funding for personnel and programs across the federal government, including the Defense Department. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">While the Army has long planned for a festival on the National Mall to celebrate its 250th birthday, the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-army-military-parade-birthday-2f5cd12c8ccd4efddc29bfa3cf8f2705\">parade was just recently added.<\/a> President Donald Trump has long wanted a military parade in the city, after seeing an elaborate one in France on Bastille Day during his first presidential term, and June 14 is also his birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., questioned whether the additional cost of the parade was appropriate since all the military services are facing 8% budget cuts, and said perhaps it could be used to improve troops\u2019 quality of life or warfighting capabilities. He prodded Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll on what he would prioritize if Congress wrote him a blank check for $45 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Driscoll replied that he thinks the parade offers a chance to tell the public about the Army. \u201cI believe very specifically that telling that story will directly lead to a recruiting boom and will fill up our pipeline for the coming years,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">At the same time, he and Gen. Randy George, chief of staff of the Army, told lawmakers that the service has now met its recruiting goal for the year \u2014 with 61,000 recruits. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/army-recruiting-goals-wormuth-secretary-15b3a67e620957b3933cd24246c28d3f\">Army officials have predicted<\/a> for months that they would hit the target early after making a series of changes to recruiting programs, recruiters and policies over the past several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">That prompted Rep. Wesley Bell, D-Mo., to ask why the parade was needed for recruiting if it&#8217;s already surging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Driscoll said the Army believes the parade \u201cwill empower an entire new generation of America\u2019s youth to catch the spirit to serve their nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wisc., defended the parade spending, saying \u201cyou cannot put a price tag on patriotism.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">House members on both sides of the aisle pressed the Army about a recent request to shift money from across the budget to support the southern border. The biggest concern, they said, is that it takes money away from base housing, which has been plagued with persistent problems, including mold, rodents and raw sewage in barracks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Rep.
