Last week we took a look at the SIG Sauer SLX556C, an ultra compact 5.56 rifle suppressor. This week we finally get our hands on the YHM Bad Larry suppressor, a .338 bore can that can handle anything from .338 LM down to 5.56×45. Since I am still trying to figure out the best 8.6 Blackout testing platform, I’ll be shooting its little brother – subsonic 300BLK. Let’s take a look.

More YHM @ TFB

Editor’s Note: The laws and regulations surrounding the National Firearms Act (NFA) are complicated. Know and understand your local, state, and federal laws before making any alterations to firearms and suppressors. I personally believe that NFA regulations shouldn’t exist, but until the laws are repealed, make sure to stay safe and legal.

SILENCER SATURDAY #326: First Shots With The YHM Bad Larry Suppressor

The YHM Bad Larry is a large bore suppressor, designed for higher pressure rounds like .338 Lapua Magnum and lower pressure rounds like subsonic 8.6 Blackout. Since I am not a long range shooter or hunter, the Bad Larry is a subsonic 8.6BLK silencer for my needs. We discussed 8.6 a few months ago and I got some lifeline/phone-a-friend advice from apex expert Tyler at Silencer Shop. I still haven’t decided on a manufacturer or a barrel length, although it looks like 12” is the optimal balance between length and performance. Hopefully I will have something in house soon.

Instead, we are going to use subsonic 300BLK for today’s testing, which is probably a good starting point since I have heard most of the rifle suppressors handle this round from the last decade. Honestly, my expectations are fairly high since the Bad Larry is nearly 7.5” long with a 1.75” diameter. It is possible that any extra bore diameter will allow more gas to circumvent the baffle system, negating any internal volume benefits over standard 7.62 rifle suppressors. I’ll throw in a comparison silencer and make some subjective observations.

SILENCER SATURDAY #326: First Shots With The YHM Bad Larry Suppressor

As I mentioned in our SHOT Show coverage from earlier this year, .338/8.6 suppressors and firearms were a bit of a hot item across a variety of manufacturers. For long range shooters, .338LM rounds boast supersonic velocities out to 1,800 yards, enjoying sweet accuracy and longer ranges before dropping into transonic territory where bullet stability starts to deteriorate. While the 8.6 Blackout cartridge won’t have the same terminal energy as .338LM at distance, this specialized cartridge can hold on to it’s velocity, loosing only 100fps at 500 yards, and stays subsonic from the muzzle to the target. Without passing from supersonic to transonic, the bullet maintains accuracy while delivering nearly 600 ft lbs of force at 500 yards (ammo specific, obviously). For suppressed rifle hunters, the 8.6 round is a medium-range dream.

As a non-reloader, ammunition selection and cost seems to be the biggest factor, with hunting loads costing between $2.50 and $3.00 per round. FMJ target loads, if you can find them, aren’t much better at just over $2 per round. It looks like I will have to invest in a hand loading setup if I plan to stay in the 8.6 Blackout game for any length of time.

Let’s take a look at the numbers.

YHM Bad Larry Suppressor – Specifications

SILENCER SATURDAY #326: First Shots With The YHM Bad Larry Suppressor

Minimum Barrel Lengths:

.338 Lapua Magnum = 20”

.300 Winchester Magnum = 20”

.308 Winchester = 10.5”

5.56 NATO = 10”

SILENCER SATURDAY #326: First Shots With The YHM Bad Larry Suppressor

The weight comes in right on target.

SILENCER SATURDAY #326: First Shots With The YHM Bad Larry Suppressor

Surprisingly, the bore diameter measures 0.3890”.

SILENCER SATURDAY #326: First Shots With The YHM Bad Larry Suppressor

For reference, the YHM Nitro N2O, a .308 and 9mm suppressor, has an identical bore diameter.

SILENCER SATURDAY #326: First Shots With The YHM Bad Larry Suppressor

With 220gr subsonic 300BLK, the Bad Larry is very quiet with a higher/sharper tone than similarly sized .300/7.62 suppressors.
