In September, we\u2019re celebrating superlatives as we look at some of the world\u2019s biggest, tallest and most expensive attractions and destinations.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-3792ce48da4c800f89d97653c456dddc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Having lived in Beijing for almost 12 years, I\u2019ve had plenty of time to travel widely in<a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/travel\/destinations\/china\" target=\"_blank\"> China<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f26f1208fb191ad6909043903d0000d0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I\u2019ve visited more than 100 cities, not to mention countless towns and villages throughout the mainland\u2019s 31 provinces.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-e4f5876c8d36506e4e83b9ae1fda4872@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Looking back, I\u2019ve come to realize it was my frequent visits to different parts of the Great Wall in Beijing that were a driving force behind my desire to explore the rest of the country and, along with it, the many sections of wall that lie outside the capital\u2019s boundaries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-971b9270d74ef565433cb55f8ac0b345@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Work on the Great Wall began more than 2,500 years ago, its origins dating back to China\u2019s Spring and Autumn Period of around 770 BCE to 476 BCE. Various sections were added in subsequent eras as competing dynasties and factions sought to exert their control.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-0c25ed90898dc05049a8add67121be49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Work eventually stopped in the 17th century.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-33ab26e2ca3f5aafa00512684b740166@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though not a single, unbroken structure, the wall spans over 21,000 kilometers, winding through 15 provinces, 97 prefectures and 404 counties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-917320f93cb0ee8f80aa52b50bba60e1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And while certain sections have been incredibly popular among tourists, many parts have slipped into obscurity, disrepair and sometimes oblivion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c09a0429190733bd96528efcf01576ee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whether you\u2019re planning to visit the Great Wall for the first time or the 50th, the following destinations are sure to make your trip to China even more worthwhile. The town\u2019s oval wall is the body, while the north gate acts as its tail. As one of the most well-preserved and truly authentic walled cities left in China today, it\u2019s definitely worth your time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-7341d795015f2cfe64421cbd7bfe0aa0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Staying in the Jingtai County center is recommended. The ancient city is only a 30-minute cab ride from your lodgings, so you can visit whenever the light is best for photos.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-40064c2f7ab75d7a00df7818db2c6310@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When in Jingtai, try local specialties such as the five Buddha tofu and the Jingtai cold mixed noodles \u2013 both are spicy vegetarian dishes. A walk through the sprawling night market in Jingtai County People\u2019s Square, which boasts more than 50 snack stalls, is also recommended for adventurous foodies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-2480fb54113ff7acb128bddedd403dc3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Getting there:<\/strong> Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, has a major international airport and high-speed train connections from many cities in China. The drive to Yongtai Turtle City from downtown Lanzhou takes about 2.5 hours (195 kilometers). Stand atop the wall at either Mutianyu or Jiankou, and you\u2019ll begin to comprehend the gravity of this statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c68b6c291cc2e129d711be94571c9bcf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These two sections are arguably the two most classic examples of Ming Dynasty Great Wall surviving today, and climbing either is guaranteed to be a life-changing experience.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-6bd9dd23f02b3863017ab0d55034c50b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mutianyu is the best portion of the \u201ctourist wall.\u201d Restored in the 1980s, it\u2019s very commercial but also superbly beautiful. Visitors not up for the hike can take a cable car to the top.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f0de84fe75a89e7247963bdde2bf4c9c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To the west of Mutianyu, Jiankou is colloquially known as the \u201cwild wall\u201d \u2013 no ticket needed and not commercialized. That being said, as of 2020, hiking at Jiankou has become somewhat frowned upon by the local government because of safety concerns.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-fe1005de77bc93f2571eaf1f2975bee4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mutianyu and Jiankou are less than a 90-minute drive (without traffic) from downtown Beijing, yet it\u2019s highly recommended to enjoy a night in the countryside if time allows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f00027fb6ec9e61c47a417abca323345@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jiankou can be accessed via Xizhazi village; if dates align, you might even be able to spend a few days with William Lindesay, world-renowned Great Wall historian, and his wonderful family at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildwall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Barracks,<\/a> their wall-side courtyard home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-ce5a4cdb1dd190d693a20638610710b6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For lodgings around Mutianyu, <a href=\"https:\/\/brickyardmutianyu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Brickyard<\/a> is a superbly comfortable choice.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-88c1a63c56e9c368fca9c4e33ca98649@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fall and spring, shades of the wall\u2019s gray brick contrast with nature\u2019s vibrant colors. Peak autumn foliage and spring cherry blossoms provide stunning backdrops for photos.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-ad6e3ad27ef5038b299a4d703328b361@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For winter sports enthusiasts, there\u2019s skiing and skating next to the Wall at locations not far from Mutianyu.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-2817999d903e9323daf8e5f80d32d93c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Getting to Mutianyu:<\/strong> Restrictions on applying for temporary driving licenses in China were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2019-09\/10\/c_138381468.htm\" target=\"_blank\">relaxed in September 2019<\/a>, so renting a car as a foreign tourist is entirely possible. (International driving licenses are <a href=\"https:\/\/internationaldrivingpermit.org\/country\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\">not accepted<\/a> in China.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9504c7a537d2047542ddf5d15ec6606e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You can also hire a car with a driver for the day or take the Mutianyu Special Tourism Bus from the Dongzhimen Wai Bus Station.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-dd6af70094a2bf751df13ebad297e6ab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Getting to Jiankou:<\/strong> Renting a car or booking private transport is recommended.
