However, issues with Starliner <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Technology\/nasa-boeings-starliner-astronauts-return-earth-spacecraft-february\/story?id=113108064\" target=\"_blank\">extended their mission by several months<\/a> and delayed their return until early 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Experts have said that spending a prolonged period in space &#8212; especially many months &#8212; can come with many changes to human physiology and psychology.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"RxNCg ykkUm PvZ nIjPJ PMXYp LmsHF SfAHY mNgye lNbol LBPRq rBLIK \">Changes due to microgravity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">One of the biggest changes comes from spending time in microgravity, which allows astronauts to float inside a spacecraft or outside during spacewalks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">During this period, there is a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/hrp\/bodyinspace\" target=\"_blank\">decrease of muscle mass<\/a> &#8212; It&#8217;s made up of three kinds of radiation: particles trapped in Earth&#8217;s magnetic field, particles from solar flares and galactic cosmic rays <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/analog-field-testing\/why-space-radiation-matters\/#:~:text=Space%20radiation%20is%20comprised%20of,space%20radiation%20represent%20ionizing%20radiation.\" target=\"_blank\">NASA said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Earth is surrounded by a system of magnetic fields, called the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/heliophysics\/focus-areas\/magnetosphere-ionosphere\/\" target=\"_blank\">magnetosphere<\/a>, that protects people from harmful space radiation. However, the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/radiation-health\/data-research\/facts-stats\/cosmic-radiation.html#:~:text=Higher%20altitudes%20mean%20greater%20exposure,0.33%20mSv%20(33%20mrem).\" target=\"_blank\">higher a person is in altitude<\/a>, the higher the dose of radiation they are exposed to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Due to prolonged exposure, astronauts can be at significant risk for radiation sickness and have a higher lifetime risk of cancer, central nervous system effects and degenerative diseases, according to<!-- -->\u00a0<a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/technology\/tech-transfer-spinoffs\/nasa-funded-space-radiation-research-fights-cancer-on-earth\/#:~:text=Astronauts%20who%20spend%20six%20months,loss%2C%20and%20some%20cardiovascular%20diseases.\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Crews aboard the ISS receive an average of 80 mSv to 160 mSv during a six-month stay, according to a<!-- -->\u00a0<a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/radiationchallenge.pdf?emrc=ba69fb\" target=\"_blank\">2017 NASA report<\/a>. Millisieverts (mSv) are units of measurement for how much radiation has been absorbed by the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Although the type of radiation is different, 1 mSv of space radiation is roughly the same as receiving three chest X-rays, the federal space agency said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">By comparison, a person on Earth receives an average of 2 mSv every year from just background radiation, NASA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;In low earth orbit where the ISS is, astronauts are at least partially protected by the magnetosphere that protects Earth from the radiation exposure of deep space,&#8221; Dr. Rihana Bokhari, acting chief scientific officer at Baylor College of Medicine&#8217;s Translational Research Institute for Space Health, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/radiation-starliner-astronauts-exposed-waiting-home\/story?id=113392605\" target=\"_blank\">previously told ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;However, they do have a greater radiation exposure than those on Earth because the ISS passes through areas of trapped radiation in their orbit,&#8221;
